Spyware

What is Spyware? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.

Spyware is malware that secretly watches what you do and reports it to someone else. It can read messages, track your location, record calls, take screenshots or turn on the camera and microphone. Some spyware is used by criminals to steal information. Some, called stalkerware, is sold as "monitoring" software and installed by a partner, ex-partner or family member who had access to the phone. Advanced commercial spyware has also been used against journalists and activists. Warning signs include unknown apps, changed settings, or someone knowing private things. Keep your phone locked and updated, review apps regularly, and use iPhone Safety Check or Android's security settings.
