Recovery scam
What is Recovery scam? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.
A recovery scam targets people who have already lost money to fraud. The scammer contacts the victim, or advertises online, claiming to be a fund recovery company, crypto tracing expert, lawyer, regulator or police officer who can get the money back. They then ask for an up-front fee, a "release tax" or access to accounts. Often the same criminals behind the first scam run the recovery scam, which is how they know the victim's details. Genuine police and regulators do not charge victims to recover funds. If you have been scammed, contact your bank and official reporting services directly, and be very wary of anyone who contacts you first.
