Pig butchering
What is Pig butchering? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.
Pig butchering is a long-running investment scam named by the criminals themselves: they "fatten the pig" with trust before "butchering" it. Contact often starts with a "wrong number" message, a dating app match or a social media friend request. Over weeks, the scammer builds friendship or romance, then shares their trading success and guides the victim to a fake crypto or trading platform. The platform shows growing profits, encouraging larger deposits. When the victim tries to withdraw, they are told to pay taxes or fees first. Many operations run from scam compounds that use trafficked workers. Never invest through a platform an online contact recommends.
