Malware

What is Malware? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.

Malware is short for malicious software: any program designed to harm your device, spy on you, or steal from you. Main types include viruses, ransomware, infostealers, spyware, adware and trojans (malware disguised as something useful). Malware usually gets in through phishing attachments, fake or pirated software, fake update pop-ups, malicious apps, or devices missing security updates. Signs can include a slow device, strange pop-ups, new apps you did not install, or accounts being accessed without you, but much modern malware stays completely hidden. Prevention works best: keep devices updated, download only from official sources, keep built-in protection switched on, and keep backups.
