Detection engineering
What is Detection engineering? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.
Detection engineering is the work of designing, building, testing and tuning the rules and logic that turn raw activity data into security alerts. A detection engineer might write a rule that flags a login from two countries within an hour, or a program running in an unusual way. Good detections catch real attacks while avoiding floods of false alarms, which waste analysts' time. Detection engineers often treat rules like software: stored in version control, peer-reviewed, tested against sample attacks, and improved over time. They work closely with SOC analysts and threat hunters, turning their findings into automated coverage. The role mixes security knowledge with data and scripting skills.
