Cryptocurrency

What is Cryptocurrency? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.

Cryptocurrency, or crypto, is digital money that exists on a blockchain, a public shared record of transactions kept by many computers. Well-known examples include Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins like USDT and USDC, which are designed to track the US dollar. Crypto can be bought on exchanges and held in wallets. For safety, two features matter most: transactions are generally irreversible, and there is no central bank to dispute a payment or check who you are paying. This is why scammers so often demand crypto. No genuine government agency, utility, police force or employer will ever require you to pay a fine, bill or fee in cryptocurrency.
