Chargeback

What is Chargeback? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.

A chargeback is a process where your card provider reverses a payment, for example when goods never arrive, are not as described, or the merchant was fraudulent. You ask your bank or card issuer, explain what happened and provide evidence such as order confirmations and messages. The issuer then investigates with the seller's bank. Chargebacks are generally strongest for credit cards, and many debit cards offer a similar scheme. There are time limits, often around 120 days, so act quickly. Bank transfers, gift cards, cash and cryptocurrency do not offer chargebacks, which is a major reason scammers push victims toward those payment methods.
