Antivirus

What is Antivirus? Plain-language definition from the CybrCrime Intel Library.

Antivirus software protects devices by scanning files, apps and downloads for known malware and by watching for suspicious behaviour, such as a program suddenly encrypting lots of files. Modern devices include it already: Microsoft Defender on Windows, XProtect on Mac, and Google Play Protect on Android. For most home users, keeping this built-in protection switched on and up to date is enough. If you buy extra security software, get it from a well-known company's official site or app store. Beware of fake antivirus: pop-ups claiming your device has many viruses and urging you to buy a cleaner are scams designed to take your money or install malware.
